Dr. Nicholas Newstrom, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Minnesota Board Approved Supervisor, brings a wealth of experience from his time in both inpatient and outpatient mental health settings. He treats patients with a variety of co-occurring disorders including addiction, anxiety, depression, sexual trauma, and atypical sexuality concerns. Committed to a collaborative approach, Newstrom sees his role as empowering his patients by exploring the origins of their problems and teaching them skills to successfully resolve issues.
Dr. Newstrom serves as the Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy program at St. Cloud State University, having earned his Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary's University and his Ph.D. in Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota. A former Michael E. Metz fellow, he completed a research and clinical postdoctoral fellowship at the Program in Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Newstrom's research interests lie in the realm of human sexuality, with a specific focus on sexual violence. He has contributed significantly to the field through his published papers on the treatment of sexual abusers and sexual consent behaviors. He is an active member of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.
